Medical billing includes the processes of both submitting claims and following up on claims made to various private and public insurance companies, in order that the proper payments for services rendered can be received by doctors and health care professionals.

However, medical billing (or medical coding as it is sometimes called) is becoming increasingly more complex in both scope and implementation. The main reason why this is so is that most health maintenance operations (HMO’s), individual hospitals, individual doctors/physicians, public and private insurance companies, as well as many government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid — each of these may have their own proprietary or custom electronic medical records systems (or sometimes known as EMR).
