Well, it is a journey type of story with Sanzohoshi in the middle and Son-Goku, which is the original model of Goku in Dragon Ball by the way, and other animal like humans. T Richard has translated this chinese version of Saiyuki into English and soon, cartoons that got ideas from Saiyuki spread out to Japan as well.

One of them were as I denoted, Dragon Ball, the very famous one. Even the image is so close that it is easy to imagine that Torii got his idea from the original Saiyuki, so thanks to that, without it, there has never been any Gohan. Dozens of other anime are inspired by Saiyuki as well.
