If you think that you will receive short term disability benefits very soon after you fill out the request, you would be very wrong.  As wonderful as it would be to have benefits given within a short time frame, a large majority of disability requests can take six to eight long months (even years) before there is a definitive answer as to whether or not you will receive any benefits and what amount you can expect to receive if your claim gets approved.  The most important thing that you can do is to not procrastinate when filing your claim.  The moment that you are aware that you need state benefits for your disability; meet with a representative from the SSI department to start the process.
